Seaspan-Vancouver, Remontowa and Fincantieri Provided with Data

BC Ferries has conducted special sea trials of two ferries to provide operational data to the three shipyards vying to convert them to liquefied natural gas-marine disel dual fuel operation.

The 550-foot Spirit of Vancouver Island is now expected to be converted to LNG-diesel dual fuel operation from the fall of 2017 through the spring of 2018.

BC Ferries’ 550-foot Spirit of Vancouver Island is expected to be converted to LNG-diesel dual fuel operation from the fall of 2018 through the spring of 2019.

The Spirit of Vancouver Island and the Spirit of British Columbia were put through their paces for the benefit of Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards, Remontowa SA of Poland, and Fincantieri of Italy.

Vessel maneuverability, acceleration and speed were demonstrated, providing the yards with data on control system parameters as well as peak power loads in variable weather, tide or current conditions.

‘Optimal Propulsive Machinery Arrangements’

“This is an important step in the bidding process for the shipyards so they can measure and verify vessel performance to provide the optimal propulsive machinery arrangements they submit as part of their bids,” BC Ferries engineering VP Mark Wilson said in a release.

“Over the next three months,” the announcement continues, “BC Ferries will continue to negotiate with the three proponents to select the final bidder.

Award Expected Early Next Year

“BC Ferries expects to award a contract for the Spirit Class mid-life upgrades and conversions to the successful bidder in early 2016.”

The agency is planning for the Spirit of British Columbia to be the first ship through the mid-life and LNG conversion process, with work taking place from the fall of 2017 through the spring of 2018. The Spirit of Vancouver Island will follow the following year from the fall of 2018 through the spring of 2019.
