DNV GL is promoting a new brand following the successful merger of Norway’s Det Norske Veritas with Hamburg-based Germanischer Lloyd. “The new brand,” DNV GL Group president and CEO Henrik Madsen said in a release, “reflects our broader service offering aimed at enabling our customers to make the world safer, smarter and greener.”

The Antwerp Port Authority has commissioned DNV to develop operational procedures for LNG bunkering in preparation for supporting clean shipping in the region, DNV says. The port aims to position itself among the leaders in the Hamburg-Le Havre region ahead of stricter emissions controls entering into force in 2015, says the Oslo-based classification society (Det Norske Veritas).

Washington State Ferries is awaiting proposals to convert six Issaquah class ferries serving Seattle/Puget Sound routes to pure liquefied natural gas or LNG-diesel dual fuel operation. The advantage is lower fuel costs over the long term and reduced emissions. The downside is general lack of experience and a plethora of operational changes and design details to be determined.

DNV GL Group to be Owned 65% by DNV and Employ More than 17,000

Norway’s Det Norske Veritas and Germany’s Germanischer Lloyd, both established in the 1860s, have agreed to merge, forming a new entity to be called DNV GL Group. “It will be one of the world’s leading ship classification societies and risk experts in the oil and gas, renewable energy and power sectors, and among the global top three in management system certification,” the firms say.
