Completes the Delivery of Four Prototype Units to Canadian National,
Seeks ‘Clarity on the Timing of Commercial LNG Locomotive Availability’

Westport Innovations said this week that it’s delivered the last of four prototype liquefied natural gas fuel tenders to Canadian National Railway for use in testing LNG locomotives. The firm reported delivery of the first unit last year (HHP Insight, April 9, 2014).

Westport's LNG tender combines a standard 10,000-gallon ISO container with proprietary fuel handling equipment. Development has been put on hold.

Westport “will continue to support CN,” the company said in its Tuesday earnings release:  “However, Westport has paused further investment in LNG tender development until there is clarity on the timing of commercial LNG locomotive availability and associated customer demand.”

Westport reported this week that revenues for its various segments topped $1 billion for the first time in 2014. Consolidated net loss, however, while an improvement on 2013, was $149.6 million, and Westport said it will continue to cut back on expenses in 2015.

CN first publicized LNG trials, in Alberta, at the end of September 2012 (HHP Insight, September 21, 2012 and October 14, 2013).
