Caterpillar Marine has released further detail about the impending retrofit of the Fure West tanker, owned by Sweden’s Furetank Rederi, to liquefied natural gas dual fuel operation. The 472-foot vessel’s existing MaK M 43 C diesel engine will be retrofitted in-hull to the 7-cylinder M 46 dual fuel platform, Cat says, with each cylinder offering 900 kilowatts of rated power, for a total of nearly 8,500 horsepower.

Sweden’s Furetank Rederi AB has tapped Taylor-Wharton for onboard liquefied natural gas fuel tanks as the existing Caterpillar-MaK 7 M 46 engine on its 472-foot Fure West tanker is converted to LNG-diesel dual fuel operation.

Caterpillar Marine and HHP Summit 2014 organizer GNA are hosting a webinar covering Cat’s marine LNG strategy as a preview to the October Summit in New Orleans.

Caterpillar Marine Power’s MaK M 46 DF

Caterpillar shipped its first LNG-diesel dual fuel MaK engine, an M 46 DF, for a German cruise ship, last year.

The free webinar featuring Caterpillar Marine new product introduction manager Leif Gross takes place on Thursday, August 28 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern / 11:00 a.m. Pacific time.

“The one-hour webinar was developed to provide a preview of the programming that will be offered at the 2014 HHP Summit, the industry’s premier event on high-horsepower, natural gas applications across multiple sectors,” says returning gold sponsor Cat.

A ‘Comprehensive’ Range

Caterpillar says it “will highlight its comprehensive dual fuel and natural gas offerings for the oil and gas, rail, marine and mining industries” in New Orleans.

Gladstein, Neandross & Associates president Cliff Gladstein will moderate the one-hour webinar on August 28.

Also slated to speak is Roy Bleiberg, gas solutions director at ABS.

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems says it has secured EPA Tier 2 Certification of all MaK engine platforms with cylinder volumes of above thirty liters. Included in the certification are the M 32 C and M 43 C engines, as well as the M 46 DF and recently announced M 34 DF dual fuel engine platforms.

October 2014 for the New M 32 C-Based MaK M 34 DF

Caterpillar is introducing a new dual fuel natural gas-diesel engine for marine applications. The new MaK M 34 DF has the same onboard footprint as the existing M 32 C diesel engine series, and as such is suitable for a wide range of vessels, from large fishing craft to cargo ships.
