Bestobell Valves: Increase in Demand

Cites ECAs as Driver Behind Clean Fuel Equipment Need

Britain’s Bestobell Marine has reported a major increase in demand for its cryogenic valves from the marine sector in the U.S., and attributes the strong business to the ECA/Emission Control Area rules forcing ship operators to reduce pollution.

Bestobell valves are employed on Harvey Gulf International Marine’s series of LNG dual fuel vessels, the first of which, Harvey Energy, is in service as the first-ever U.S. flag ship to run primarily on LNG.

“This kind of vessel is a blueprint for the future of marine engineering,” Bestobell sales director Duncan Gaskin says in this week’s release.

Bestobell says that will supply valves for two Orca-class vessels, operated by TOTE/Totem Ocean, that will be converted to LNG. “When they are re-launched they will be some of the most environmentally advanced ships in the U.S.,” Bestobell says.

‘Fire-Safe’

The company’s cryogenic valves are specifically designed for marine applications, “which includes the very important requirement for the valves to have fire-safe properties, whereby all components must be able to withstand a minimum temperature of 925 degrees C (as per the interim IGF code).”

Bestobell has more than 50 years of industrial gas experience and 15 years of experience in the marine LNG markets. The firm’s cryogenic valves are used on LNG carriers, FLNGs (floating production and storage units) and FSRUs (floating, storage and re-gasification units).

Bestobell Valves for Dubai LNG Tugs

Cryogenic Globe Valves Via Wärtsilä for Dubai Drydocks Vessels

The UK’s Bestobell Marine reports a major new order from Wärtsilä’s fuel gas handling division to supply cryogenic globe valves for the Middle East’s first liquefied natural gas-fueled harbor tug. updated March 26

“The new tug will use LNG as the primary fuel and will be operated by Dubai Maritime City,” Bestobell says.

The Wärtsilä-powered LNG-diesel dual fuel tugs for Dubai's Drydocks World are to be the Middle East's first.

The valves will be part of LNGPac fuel gas systems for the 95-foot (29-meter) boat, which according to Wärtsilä will be the first of a series of nine. The design also features Wärtsilä’s 20DF dual fuel engines (HHP Insight, November 19, 2014).

‘Great Opportunities’

“An increasing number of vessels are being built using LNG as their primary fuel which presents great opportunities for our cryogenic valves,” Bestobell Marine sales director Duncan Gaskin said in a release.

Bestobell says it was chosen as the preferred supply partner to Wärtsilä behind its extensive experience in the marine sector its work with classification societies. United Arab Emirates-based Tasneef will class the new LNG tug and provide advisory services for the project, Bestobell reports.

Harvey Gulf

Bestobell says it’s supplied Wärtsilä’s gas handling unit with more than 20 shipsets of cryogenic globe valves over the past three years, including offshore supply vessels built in Mississippi for Harvey Gulf International Marine.

“The valves are fitted in the tank room space between the LNG fuel tank and the engine and are a critical part of the piping system that feeds the LNG fuel to the vaporizers. These vaporizers then convert the LNG back to gas.” The fire-safe valves “are based on proven designs that have been used by the company on LNG ship applications for over a decade,” Bestobell says.

MAN High Pressure

Bestobell Marine also supplies high-pressure globe valves for MAN ME-GI engines, where natural gas is injected into the engine at over 300 bar. “MAN has sold over one hundred of these types of engines in the past two years, driving a rapid increase in demand for high pressure cryogenic valves for these fuel gas systems,” Bestobell says.

Bestobell is a unit of PEG, Britain’s President Engineering Group.
