Cryogenic Globe Valves Via Wärtsilä for Dubai Drydocks Vessels
The UK’s Bestobell Marine reports a major new order from Wärtsilä’s fuel gas handling division to supply cryogenic globe valves for the Middle East’s first liquefied natural gas-fueled harbor tug. updated March 26
“The new tug will use LNG as the primary fuel and will be operated by Dubai Maritime City,” Bestobell says.
The Wärtsilä-powered LNG-diesel dual fuel tugs for Dubai’s Drydocks World are to be the Middle East’s first.
The valves will be part of LNGPac fuel gas systems for the 95-foot (29-meter) boat, which according to Wärtsilä will be the first of a series of nine. The design also features Wärtsilä’s 20DF dual fuel engines (HHP Insight, November 19, 2014).
“An increasing number of vessels are being built using LNG as their primary fuel which presents great opportunities for our cryogenic valves,” Bestobell Marine sales director Duncan Gaskin said in a release.
Bestobell says it was chosen as the preferred supply partner to Wärtsilä behind its extensive experience in the marine sector its work with classification societies. United Arab Emirates-based Tasneef will class the new LNG tug and provide advisory services for the project, Bestobell reports.
Bestobell says it’s supplied Wärtsilä’s gas handling unit with more than 20 shipsets of cryogenic globe valves over the past three years, including offshore supply vessels built in Mississippi for Harvey Gulf International Marine.
“The valves are fitted in the tank room space between the LNG fuel tank and the engine and are a critical part of the piping system that feeds the LNG fuel to the vaporizers. These vaporizers then convert the LNG back to gas.” The fire-safe valves “are based on proven designs that have been used by the company on LNG ship applications for over a decade,” Bestobell says.
MAN High Pressure
Bestobell Marine also supplies high-pressure globe valves for MAN ME-GI engines, where natural gas is injected into the engine at over 300 bar. “MAN has sold over one hundred of these types of engines in the past two years, driving a rapid increase in demand for high pressure cryogenic valves for these fuel gas systems,” Bestobell says.
