LNG Hybrid Barge Trials Complete

Pioneering Vessel Soon to Power Cruise Ships in Hamburg Harbor

Becker Marine Systems reports the successful completion of trials of its Hummel LNG Hybrid Barge, “right in time for the beginning of the cruise ship season.” The specialty vessel is essentially a liquefied natural gas–powered floating powerplant designed to provide electricity to cruise ships at berth in Hamburg’s busy harbor.

Becker Marine Systems says it expects formal commissioning of the Hummel LNG Hybrid Barge for cruise ship cold-ironing in May.

Becker Marine Systems says it expects formal commissioning of the Hummel LNG Hybrid Barge for cruise ship cold-ironing in May.

Hummel, which was built in Slovakia, has five generator sets supplied by Zeppelin Power Systems providing a total of 7.5 megawatts of electricity. The generators are driven by Caterpillar G3516C engines, fueled solely by natural gas (HHP Insight, December 4, 2013).

“The operation of all five of the Hummel’s generator sets recently took place as part of class acceptance,“ Becker Marine managing directors Dirk Lehmann and Henning Kuhlmann said in a release. The trials “represented a departure for both Bureau Veritas, the French classification society, and the authorities involved,” Becker says.

Impacts and Spikes

The tests, done in collaboration with BV, included a variety of large load impacts and load spikes simulation, with load transfer from zero to 7.5 megawatts “achieved well below the time of two minutes set by the classification society.”

“The overall LNG Hybrid Barge system with gas motors is an impressive technical achievement,” BV marine VP Hans Gätjens says in the Becker announcement.

“The trials were also a milestone for classification,” he said. “There is thus nothing standing in the way of the LNG Hybrid Barge’s first planned supply of power to cruise ships over the course of May.”

Hummel received its first LNG, delivered by Shell Gasnor from the Fluxys terminal in Zeebrugge, at the end of last year (HHPi, December 17, 2014).
