Netherlands-based Shell Western LNG BV will supply liquefied natural gas fuel for two large cruise ships being built by Carnival Corporation, Shell said Monday. The vessels are to start sailing in northwest Europe and the Mediterranean in 2019.

“This will be the first time LNG in dual-fuel engines will be used in the cruise industry to power ships both in port and at sea,” Shell said.

Carnival’s Aida Cruises unit in Europe earlier this year named Shell as its “strategic partner” and supplier of LNG for two new cruise ships in port (HHP Insight, April 29).

Starting Early

“We have been working closely with Carnival to get to this point in our commercial partnership,” Shell downstream LNG GM Lauran Wetemans said in yesterday’s announcement.

“Working together from an early stage is critical in helping the transition to cleaner LNG cruising” he said. “This is a unique partnership that will contribute to a robust and reliable LNG fuel supply chain, along with opportunities for future growth.”

‘A New Model for Powering Next-Generation Cruise Ships’

“We are committed to reducing our air emissions and improving air quality through various means, including LNG,” Carnival senior maritime affairs VP Tom Strang said in the Shell release. Carnival, he said, is “creating a new model for powering next-generation cruise ships.”

Carnival cruise ship is to fuel from Shell’s special LNG bunker vessel that will load at the Gate/Gas Access to Europe terminal in Rotterdam. The second is expected to fuel “at one of the ports in the Western Mediterranean.”

In addition to the Aida ships now using LNG in port and the newer ones to use LNG at sea as well, Carnival just last month announced plans for four LNG ships for North America for 2020 and 2022 (HHPi, September 9).
