TGE, BV for NYK-GDF LNG Bunker Vessel

Bureau Veritas to the Class Pioneering Ship for Zeebrugge & Baltic

Bonn-based TGE Marine Gas Engineering reports a contract to design and provide the liquefied natural gas fuel system, LNG cargo tanks, and cargo handling system for a bunker vessel being built in Korea for service in the Port of Zeebrugge and Baltic Sea. The contract includes an option for a second vessel, TGE says.

Separately, Paris-based Bureau Veritas said it would class the 364-foot (111 meters) vessel, which will have two Type C LNG tanks and will operate from the Fluxys terminal in Zeebrugge.

The vessel with capacity for 5,100 cubic meters of LNG (nearly 1.35 million gallons) was ordered earlier this year by Japan’s NYK and GDF Suez from Korea’s Hanjin Heavy Industries (HHP Insight, July 2).

Said to be the first of its kind, she is to serve customers including Norway’s UECC, United European Car Carriers, which has ordered two 595-foot dual fuel LNG cargo vessels (HHPi, March 8), also being built in Asia.

Delivery in 2016

The new bunker vessel, which reportedly is costing some $50 million, is to be delivered in 2016, TGE says. The contract with Hanjin was signed in August.

Its advent “will help kick-start LNG bunkering, bringing forward the use of this clean fuel in North European waters,” BV executive VP Philippe Donche-Gay said in a release.

“TGE Marine has worked for quite some years on the development of LNG bunker ships and we consider this new segment as a potential growth area for the future,” CEO Manfred Küver said in a release.

TGE says it’s “worked with several potential clients on conceptual designs for all kinds of new generation bunker ships,” ranging from 2,000 7,500 cubic meters capacity.
