Two Cummins KTA50 Engines Converted for Mubadala,
Fuel Is the Raw Gas By-Product of Offshore Oil Production
Washington State’s Energy Conversions, Inc. and its distributor in Thailand are commissioning the second duel fuel conversion of a Cummins KTA50 engine on a Mubadala Petroleum oil rig. The engines are running on a mix of diesel and raw gas produced by the rig itself.
“Dual fuel can work with a large range of gas quality and interruptible gas supply,” says ECI president Scott Jensen.
The first engine on platform Ban Yen B5/27 in the Gulf of Thailand was commissioned for duel fuel operation by ECI and Bangkok-based Precision Power Services in March 2012, and the second is being brought on line now.
70 Gallons of Diesel per Hour
The engines provide electricity for the rig, notably the electric submersible pumps (ESPs) that bring the oil, and with it by-product natural gas, to the platform. “There are three of these units on the platform running all at the same time with a load-sharing module,” says Donald Brown of PPS.
The engines normally consume about 70 gallons per hour of diesel, he says.
With dual fuel, “We have estimated there is approximately 15% to 20% savings in diesel consumption,” Brown told HHP Insight – a savings of approximately ten to 14 gallons per hour.
Savings of Around $1,000 per Day, per Engine
“With the unit running 24 hours a day, that would 240 to 336 gallons of diesel per day. With diesel prices at 113 THB [Thai baht] per gallon, that would be a cost savings of 27,120 to 37,968 THB per day – $821 to $1150 per day U.S.” – per engine.
“ROI is very quick for this project,” Brown says.
